I wouldn't be able to play without th shielding, as a casual player. I build an army, log off, remember i should have an army ready, log in, attack, set army then log off. Without the free shield, id get hit everytime with full raids against me. I'd never be able to gain resources unless i went on hour long, back to back sessions in order to keep my online shield up. Casual playing would be destroyed and only hardcore players would remain.

We don't all have time to play games constantly, at least with a 12 hour shield you can let your resources build up a bit while you live a normal life!

I agree that the 12h shield is nice, and it should not be taken away. Actually, I argue that the percentage limit at 40 % to get a shield is too high. I just don't like that you get the easy 12h shield from the town hall, like it is now, because it makes it an advantage to lose on purpose. But, as many has argued, it may be better to introduce other incentives to protect the Town Hall, rather than removing the shield.
I see no other incentive. If I attack an exposed town hall, I get trophies using 4 barbarians or a hero and he gets a shield. And vice versa. It looks like a win-win for both parties. The only people I see complaining are those that want to revenge the person but they gets a shield too quickly.
Once you get in the crystal league or higher, you'll see that the town halls are protected. trophies are too valuable at that high a league.
Binbender, you are not alone...I was thinking about this the other day and came up with a nearly identical solution to what you had.
To me the fundamental problem is the 35% raid that clears out traps, clan castle troops, ect. and leaves you set up to get cleaned out. To me, it feels like I am getting punished for setting up a good defensive base that prevented more damage in the initial attack.
I also agree that the whole 'farming' strategy feels more like what I would call a game exploit. But it is such a good one that most players (myself included) take advantage.
I understand the argument that you can rest easier knowing you have your TH sitting out and you will get a 12 hour shield. However, I would like to rest easier knowing someone isn't going to hit me for 35% and leave my base vulnerable to the next attack. I like most people cannot stay on or keep checking all the time. Often I have built up whatever resource to the point I can make an upgrade, but I cannot stay on waiting for a builder to be freed up. When I log in next, I have 2-3 attacks against me, each one taking a considerable amount of loot. I've had this happen even when I set my th outside.
My opinion is that the whole purpose of the shield is to prevent someone from being repeatedly attacked. I would really like to see the percentage lowered...even if it only gave a 8 hr shield. I also recognize that farming has become a huge part of the game. This would be my proposal that tries to address most of the concerns...
attack with less than 20% and no stars - No Shield
attack between 20% and 40% OR th destroyed - 8hr Shield.
40%-80% - 12 hour shield
80%+ - 16 hour shield.
This is not a huge change. The addition shields from the 20%-40% attacks is balanced by the shorter shield for just the th being destroyed.

The OPs suggestion I think its pretty shortsighted. it sounds more like he got mad about something that didn't go his way and got going on a campaign for his own interests without thinking of the game as a whole. What he is suggesting would mess up the game for most people. Reading this thread it seems 'most people' have weighed in to say as much too and its really just the OP that doesn't like it. So I can't see messing everyone else up to make one guy happy.

I may have mis-read the OP, but my impression was his primary concern was not getting a shield when taking 30% damage. Like him I find this very frustrating. Like I said, I feel like I am getting punished for having a good defense. I have an attacker that has likely taken 100k gold and elixir, taken out my clan castle troops, sprung my well placed traps, and left me set up to get attacked again since they did not get to that 40% mark.
When I am saving for a big upgrade, I can have a lot of loot sitting around and I don't have the time to stay online waiting for the last 100k gold or for a builder to free up.
I would just add a shorter shield for the 20-40% damage in exchange for making the shield for losing the th a little shorter. Farmers can still farm, but would only get an 8 hour shield instead of a 12 hour shield.
