I've been using a technique where you: use hogs and heal them when it's ready so they destroy all the defences, (and then use wizards)
dragons and minions to rush into a base, and the standard: archers barbarians healers giants (and sometimes minions and a golem to) that's all I've been using right now (for a th 8 player)

any techniques I could also use?
please note a expensive and a cheap way of training troops.

Farming or war?
TH8 farming is should be Barch. 2 Bombers in each barrack, and two barracks barbs, two barracks Archers. Raid the collectors and storages, where possible get 50% and / or the TH. Rinse & Repeat. If you are boosting while you do this, the next army will almost be ready when you get back. Be a little picky about the next button and you'll hit a lot of abandoned bases as well. TH8 farming is full of them.

For expensive perhaps GoWiPe? Or if you don't have all of the troops, then dragons. For just farming then Barch, if you see storages a lot, then giant healer like the strategy you mentioned above. Otherwise use Chief Pat's goblin strategy. 8 Giants 8 wallbreakers 30% archers 70% goblins.

Its dependant on the base you're attacking I guess.

Barch in silver2 to Gold 3. Save your rage for getting de.

Try balloonion. 30 Level 5 balloons and 25 minions. Target TH 7 or TH 8 with weak/exposed/upgrading AD and heal around wizard towers. Very reliable 3 star if you can take out AD fairly early, but watch out for CC troops.

Usually wait until balloons have taken most/all of the defenses before releasing the minions to cleanup, or (if the base it too hard to 3 star). Rush a side with a line of balloons followed by minions to cut a path to the resources.

Not as fast/cheap as barch, but it's more fun (IMO) and easier to get DE.
