Walls aside, it takes 91 million elixir and 202 million gold to max TH9. You're going to have to do a lot of farming to max TH9, and farming armies are paid for with elixir.
And like everyone else said, you can also spend elixir on walls
I wish they would add level 4 pekka to TH9
Most of the elixir lab upgrades take longer than gold upgrades on the base. Also massive walls as everyone said above
It's not like there's a shortage of things to do because you do 4 Camps, SF, Lab, 2 DE Drills 3x, 2 DB 2x, DE storage 2x.
The TH9 lab is really short on lix upgrades assuming you've maxed your lab at TH8.
This is why we needed lix for walls.
Use it to upgrade your spelling.
As others have said, they are assuming you've going to skull walls by the time to get to TH9, so walls become a dumping ground for extra elixir. Do the camps, CC, and troop upgrades, then start putting it in barracks & walls.

There used to be lots of elixir in higher leagues because of this fact but now you are able to dump it into walls. The orginal game model was a lot better but now for elixir I beat up newbies.
My advice is upgrade all troops if you love war..
