Does logging in to a Google account really protect your village? What do they mean by that?

It means that if in case you lost your phone/tablet you can still get your village back by logging in to your google account on another device. So yes it keeps your account safe

Oh no, not even close... To get a shield you can 1) purchase shield using gems or 2) if your village is at least 40% destroyed or your TH is destroyed.

A free way of getting a shield is by moving your TH outside your walls
