Doing AQ first is better in longrun, but if you think about it, would you rather have high lvl queen, but when upgrading, a low lvl king (which is horrible) or a low lvl queen, but still a high lvl king (which is total beast)? Sorry if confusing, but I'd do king first.

I've opted to do the heroes in levels of 5, with the BK hitting the higher interval of 5 first.
Because I find the Queen even at a lower level is more valuable, so when I use the King at least he will be a decent level.

I've been doing them in batches of 5 since they were both lvl 10. I put king down for 5 weeks then queen down for 5 weeks. The reason I do king first is I'd rather have a stronger king when queen is down. I've managed to max my dark elixir troops too. King is now 30, queen is on her way 26.
I alternate them a level each the thought of a lvl 30 queen and level 20 king makes my skin crawl haha id rater them be the same there both currently lvl 21.....
Sadly, a level 40 king will still run circles around the base rather than going towards the core for DE.
Optimal strategy is to do both as long as you can... I would prioritize queen over king when doing just 1.

Currently my barb king is lvl 20 and my queen is upgrading to 21. I plan on getting my queen to lvl 30 before touching my king because she is better for cw defence vs laloon and hogs and she can come in clutch in a raid.

If you can farm enough dark elixir to keep both busy then upgrade both at the same time. Let your clan now so you can target weaker bases with gowipe. I say gowipe because pekkas are like heroes.

Here is my opinion as a TH9 player.
Upgrade both at the same time if you can.
Short term - as a TH9 farmer it is much easier having the queen assist you in collecting DE. But relying on her to farm many thousands of DE can become a problem when you no longer have her. Unless you are able to adapt strategies quickly.
In the long term as a TH9 farmer it would be better to upgrade AQ over BK because then you can farm DE even more faster with a high level queen making it much easier to level up your BK. This is in terms of efficiency.
As someone who cares about war I would say get AQ to around 15 and prioritise the BK. This way she can't be ignored in hog or hound based attacks and help in defence.
I believe in prioritising BK because as a TH9 attacker it is crucial to take out that AQ for the 3* and most of the time it will always be the BK who takes her out. Barb king over AQ all day.
This is opinion though but I hope it helps.
