The point is though, is how many people who don't play mobile games would really go and download Clash of Clans because of this commercial? And if you already play mobile games, there's a 90% chance you already heard or tried Clash of Clans because it's always promoted as Top Grossing Free App.
Superbowl commercials upwards of 20kk is not a reasonable investment for return of new purchases. I doubt they received enough new customers who will pay to not only make up the 20kk spent, but profit above it.
Superbowl commercials are more of a statement of you as a company. You made it. You've made so much money that you can throw 20kk into a 60 second commercial.
That 20kk would could be spent in a year of direct lead generated marketing and would garner more new downloads than 1 - 60 second superbowl commercial. Why do they do it? Because they can!
Superbowl commercials is basically the Superbowl for Marketing companies. It's like an fresh faced Architecture being able to design his first Skyscraper. It's what you dream about when you are in the marketing field. I'd love to be able to create my own Superbowl commercial for my company on day. When we make it that big, enough to throw 20kk into a simple 60 second, one time play ad, it's a statement of our success more than anything.
