No, the botters would get round any myopic solution like this or in the OP fairly easily, while the people that would be harmed are the innocent new forumers, particularly those coming on to report a bug or something, so its not really fair.

    Great idea....!

If you wish to ban a huge number of legit users as well. For that matter, banning the first two octets would ban just about everyone.

I already proposed an idea like that in IFR but it turns out people didn't like it. Time requirement is fine tho but it wouldn't prevent spambot as much.

And I don't think captcha code would help either since spambots can bypass this.

It's a game of cat and mouse really - we plug one hole they find another.

You guys see maybe 5% of the total we have to shovel out of the way which is a good thing trust me.

Well, on IFR we had a long and lengthy discussion about stopping the repetitive ruled out ideas. Here are conclusions from that (Hydro's link up there)

1)People post ruled out ideas because they dont know it is ruled out. They post because they think it is awesome
2)time limits might make a large percentage just decide to come back later.
3)time limits can stop people who just come here angry that their co kicked people and want SC to hold their hand and implement something. (i.e. complaining)
4)post limits (post 20 replies to threads before you can start thread) would result in spam
5)post limits could work for people who will later become the regulars of the forum
6)redirecting newcomers to the subforum (regardless of their activity elsewhere) directly to the stickies and not allowing them to post a new thread until all stickies have been viewed (with some magical interface that doesn't just let them view and exit) is the best solution (via poll).
7)most new idea suggesters would probably read the stickies if they were redirected to it and advised to read because they are here to help.

That was a little off topic, but it is the secondary purpose of this thread.

As for spam, yesterday there was an entire page of spam, so I agree that time limits, post limit or something has to be doen. An interesting idea in IFR directed at spam was to add a Captcha code (the slightly distorted letters you have to type in when you create an account almost anywhere else (to prevent spam)) when signing up. I think that this is the best solution for dealing with spam.

So add a Captcha to deal with spam and a redirection to the stickies to deal with new idea suggesters.

Post limit would not work as there are legit users who register a new account to report on bugs etc...

A spambot is a computer programme that posts useless or advertising threads that clutters up the forums. There has been a lot of spam lately.

It might be rather complicated, but it's not usually that useful, there's always people on to report the spammers and it's just a matter of whether the mods are on or not.
