If you end any battle, at any point, without placing a troop - it doesn't count as a loss. You just return home as if nothing ever happened

Its not a win or a loss. It just shows you the ending battle with 0 troops deployed and 0 stars.. so yeah say its a loss. It's just like you pressed "End Battle" before the 30 seconds had ended.
No it doesn't show up in your attack log.

As long as you do not deploy a troop, you can end the battle at any time and not loose anything.

This happens to me all the time, how has it not to everyone else? Nexting around and doing other things at the same time, then the battle has already started. If you don't put down a troop it still allows you to 'End Battle' rather than 'Surrender'. It doesn't matter how long the counter goes if you haven't put a troop down. End battle counts as nothing, the same as ending or nexting before the counter goes down. Look to see which one the end button says and you will know if you are going to lose trophies or not. Surrender always means trophies lost.
