Btw, we also call it Ex-Bow instead of Crossbow.
X-Something with "X" pronounced "Cross" is a common abbreviated spelling in English that has been present since the middle ages. Alternate reading "Christ/Chris-".

Very cool breakdown and explanation. Everyone I know calls it an "Ex-bow" as well, so now it's just a habit.
