Glad to hear he's having fun. My BK was a lot of fun too, for a few days. The novelty wore off though. I'm just upgrading to TH8, so the AQ is still a few months away for me.
How's that base buildout coming along? Does he have all 6 elixir collectors? Did he get a third builder?
His base still looks looks like that as posted on page 5. (One big rectangular compound with double walls). He now has three level 1 elixir collectors outside. I tell him to upgrade the lowest level collectors first, but his builders are stuck already upgrading existing collectors to level 8 or 9.
Still only two builders. I don't advise him to ask his parents for more money.
I think the AQ is more fun, because she actually destroys defences, unlike the BK who wanders around the outside.
Does he have enough achievements within reach to earn the 500 gems? Just trying to think of a way to help him get that 3rd builder.
And yeah, if nothing else, get those collectors to level 4 or 5 when the builders come free again. I think it only takes like a couple hours if I remember correctly. I think it's what, 1 minute to build, 5 minutes to L2, 15 min to L3, 1 hr to L4, and 2-3 hrs to L5? He could get the collectors to L4 in a single session, between attacks.
It's definitely possible. Just advise him to focus on upgrading barch, use a farming base, and hover around gold 3 for collector raids. It'll be hard, but it'd be a shame to see someone spend that much money and then have to quit/restart.

You should try the rush route. You can get your TH8 lab done along with the lvl 5 barb/archer/waller/giant research within the first month. During that time you'll have plenty of time to get your 2nd oil drill and bring both to lvl 3 along with getting the oil storage to 80k capacity. TH8 is an absolute grind, and not a TH level I would recommend a player sit back on, even if they wanted to max most things at every TH level. TH9 offense is incredible, and that AQ really is a gamechanger. You could be TH9 in 5 weeks and be fully prepared for the necessary resource requirements for the beginner TH9. For TH8 defenses during that span, just focus on maxing those wiz towers and mortars.
What about the AD's? Right now I have a level 5 and a level 4 AD. TH8 upgrade finishes in 2 days. My first drill is already level 3, and my BK is upgrading to level 5 now, should finish tomorrow, a day before my TH.
As for the barb/archer/waller/giant research, hehe, that's my bread and butter farming army. Those were my first 4 upgrades when I got to TH7. I'll build a giant-healer army during a shield to bust open a juicy TH7's core when the shield expires, but once I'm in a farming session, I gem 2 barracks, queue barbs in one, archers in the other, and giants and WB's in the other two (un-gemmed). Seems to fit my needs.
Yeah ADs are the defenses I work on right after I finish my maxing my splash defenses early. They are important for stopping dragon raids from 3-starring you in war as a TH8, so if you war often enough and don't want to be a liability on defense, make sure to get those ADs to 6 during your time at TH8 (or while you're on your way to TH9 during construction). But I do splash first b/c it is the best defense against the most common farming raids on your base that you'll see (Barch/BAM). Wiz towers then mortars is the preferred order, I know wiz towers are more expensive but it's worth it to knock them out first.
Giants lvl 5 aren't really that great for farming at TH8, so you should focus on barbs/archers/wallers first. But if you do decide to rush through TH8 to get to TH9, make sure you get your giants to lvl 5 at least during the construction time so that you can do giants lvl 6 first when your TH9 lab finishes. Giants lvl 4 are solid for TH7 farming, Giants lvl 5 aren't too great (plus more expensive) for TH8 farming, but Giants lvl 6 are outstanding for TH9 farming.
May be he could wait for his birthday for more gems and buy a decent army (barraks, camps, lab, and barch troops upgrades).
then learn to raid barching.
then raise to master and farm for league bonus.
leave TH outside hopping for snipes and slowly raise aother building to a proper level
Hope the village is saved so he can continue on another device if needed!
