Town hall upgrades take a while to complete, the first half of the upgrade you should focus on upgrading any additional walls/defenses that you haven't done already. The second half (or final day or 2, depending on how good a farmer you are) of the upgrade start filling your storages and not collecting from collectors for the new buildings you unlock.

Dumping gold into walls is always effective. Another tip I can offer is keeping your barracks queue full. Say your normal army comp is barch- once you have full army camps of cheap units fill your queue with drags/pekka/best(expensive). Do the same with your dark barracks. Doing so will keep your resources tied into these unfinished units. Once you are ready to use another builder, delete those units in your barracks and you will get the cost back for them in full.

Before you log out, drop trophies and leave your town hall exposed. The lower THs aren't strong enough to raid storages, so they will take the TH and loot bonus.
