What's the point of attacking a farmer? The point is to be vastly more powerful than those around you.
And as a farmer i would stay logged in all day then spend everything before i go to sleep amd spend the day just targetting everyone with the most gold. All that would do is double or triple what farmers farm.

Nah, there are too many ways to take advantage of that.
For example:
Dude A and Dude B are friends. Dude A and Dude B hatch a plan to attack such that Dude B attacks Dude A and purposely loses. Now Dude A has +10 trophies, but no shield. So Dude B continues this strategy and attacks Dude A until Dude A has 10904913401810483490283420398423094820394823049823 0498 trophies and blows the Clash of Clan servers to shreds
