Boosting Barracks/Instant Finishing troops is the best way to spend gems then when your storages are capped speed up an upgrade, spend spare on walls then start an upgrade
and repeat that process until you have no gems left

Fozzie: According to the wiki, one spawns every 8 hours, regardless of activity
GranteIsles: I get 2 grow per day if every 8 hrs is right I should be getting 6
Come on its your money and you should spend it whichever way you like... Heck you could buy the gem decorations for all I care. As long as people are spending and the game get new updates.
