Heroes should be available even while upgrading . Because your upgrading his power and hp , your not changing his look . Just like when you upgrade a troops or a army camp , you can still use the troop or still have troops in that army camp . Most of the time I'm upgrading my barbarian king so I don't really use him that much . This would be helpful for those who upgrade their heroes a lot . Thank you .

If you are talking about generally, its because regular troops are being upgraded in the Lab. Although its the altar that is technically being upgraded, the king is the one that gets the up. Think of it like the Spell factory
