Air def are pretty critical against air raiders... but then so are xbows from th9 on. They take longer to upgrade. It's ok really, things are gonna get worse for you before they get better when it comes to upgrading. But one day (note assumption: I'm still th9) you'll get infernos to cover your other defensive upgrades so the world will be all swell again.
You shouldn't have to wait until a higher Town Hall level for things to be 'balanced' again/for-once. That's just poor planning.
OP has the right angle, the air protection is what the issue is about, but reducing the Air Defense upgrade time isn't even a minor bandaid solution for it.

Made a thread already about the air defense issue. Not sure exactly how to fix it, since it is a somewhat complex issue, but I know for sure the 'air defense' building in the game design isn't exactly the best way to go about things. It feels like a patch solution to the air cover problem, by adding a high damage, highly specialized, building to the mix of other defences that can also do air cover, but are wholly inadequate to the job of fending off any real massive air offensive.
AD upgrade time always bothered me to, haha.
But I also don't think dragons deserve a nerf. I only use mass dragons once a day, which is in the morning after they've been cooking overnight.
Having four level 9 barracks and more elixir than you know what to do with, dragon raids can be done regularly. I send in as few as possible on someone to win, and watch how they react. Half the time I make an elixir profit, despite the costs. You can flatten a TH6 with bad air defense placement with 3 or 4 dragons, and no spells. Maybe a BK is needed to speed up cleanup, but still, the layover is like 30 minutes for such raids. It is interesting to see what the next most powerful defense building is when doing such raids on weak air defense targets. When you don't overkill them with dragons, you'll find that archer towers and teslas do a significant amount of damage to those critters.
