My friend has never bought gems, has all five builders, two level 30 heroes, and is three walls away from having all lava walls.
Me, however... :\

I'm a long way away lol. I rushed to lvl 9 in September when work started up (I'm a teacher) and have been raiding 2x per day since then. I had all pink walls lol 5 BK all lvl 4 Teslas, and 0 of my DE lab upgrades done. Now I have all purples all DE lab work done aside from valks and hounds, all purple walls and most importantly, 2 lvl 6 drills and all collectors lvl 12 so I can keep bringing in the loot while I'm working. I hope to be done with defenses and all legos by summer vacation. Although based on my current pace that ain't gonna happen.

I just maxed my TH9 without ever buying any gems. All builder huts were purchased with obstacle/achievement gems: I didn't get my 5th builder until I was mid-TH9.
I started playing at the end of Dec 2012. I think I hit TH9 in the fall of 2013, but I took a 2-3 month break from Clash starting around the 2013 holidays. And I've been playing very infrequently the last 3-4 months.
Lava walls are much, much easier now that elix can be used, so it wouldn't surprise me if more and more people started maxing out TH9s without buying any gems.
Obviously there have been... It isn't that difficult.
Max stuff
In my opinion being a maxed th9 is stupid and inefficient, and there is nothing special about someone who had done it without ever buying gems compared to someone who bought gems for builders or even someone who bought gems for boost and upgrade time. The only difference is it take a little longer, it would still take the same number of raids so it doesn't substantiate to anything.
Plus the reason why it is inefficient is because you would either max heroes and proceed to waste de or max walls and proceed to waste gold/elix. The only case where this wouldn't happen is if you coincidentally maxed them both simultaneously.
Masterov is maxed th 10 (except walls and heros) and he never bought gems. Jk the only thing masterov knows how to do is buy
gems
Can you tell me your clan and ingame name?
I think it is pretty difficult... How far did you get as a TH9? And what did you spend gems on?
No, i have maxed heroes and i dont have max dark elixir at all. With one hogbarch boost i loose like 15K de (in gold 1/2)
Right now i am boosting barch, so i have dark elixir for after the boosts end to use hogbarch.
But if someone is maxing wallls first, they will waste lot of time doing heroes (over 200 days)
And it is way easier with boosts, as would take you 4x as much time without boosting.
And hero farming... have you farmed heroes?
The only difficult thing about farming heroes is that you cant use your heroes. If someone would finish hero upgrading time, it is super easy to farm heroes.
And even if you gem usual upgrade time, its way easier, as you can have a max defene within a month or less and protect your loot better which is very diffucult at TH9!

True that ending up with maxed walls and still doing heroes is the worst, as de comes easier as th10 anyway. But even still, the only reason you are so ready to use de is because you aren't doing heroes, but the reality is that there are still hero levels to do but you simply restricted them from yourself and stayed as th9. You probably wouldn't be using hog barch if your heroes weren't maxed. Due to walls being harder as th10 there is some reason to stay as a th9 but overall the extra de expenditure/wastage overturns in my opinion.
It may be easier with boosts but the only difference is time, the amount of raids they would have to do is the same. You can make up the difference simply by waiting for troops to cook. The amount an active farmer loses should be negligible in relation to what they make so that doesn't matter either. It is true that people that gem every single hero upgrade have an offense advantage for farming though, but loads of people upgrade heroes without that. Gemming time for every single hero upgrade is quite expensive, the active guys who gem time usually do it so they can put them back down or use them for war, not to continuously have them up.
