In wars, definitely start working on GoWiPe. As a currently maxed (working on last upgrades now) TH 8, I only get attacked by dragons in wars. I get 1 starred like 75% of the time and 2 starred 25%. Never 3 starred. Dragons cannot 3 star TH 9 and its tough to get 2 stars. The extra air mines and air defense just make all the difference.
Tldr: Learn to do GoWiPe.

I would be using GoWiPe in war instead of mass drags (although I know how they pulverize TH7s) since they would mostly be killing your drags like no one's business as a mid-max TH8. Basically anyone with three level 5 ADs and good archer towers.
