In these types of games, it's common for people to request a means of converting from one resource (gold, elixer, or DE) to another. They want things too easy. But it would be cool to give them half of what they want, and the other half (their brainwork) would provide the game extra fun:
Add a marketplace for selling Elixer or DE for gold and for buying Elixer or DE with gold with these features:
1. a substantial commission is the cost of each exchange.
2. the commission varies by simulated "market forces", starting out so high that few players participate. Over time, you drop commissions until you see a modest rate of exchange. I propose a modest rate of only an average of 3% of gold would be used for elixer/de purchases and 3% of elixer plus DE would get sold for gold.
3. Because players vary greatly in intelligence, I would not make it a true free market of all players. (The result would be the young or foolish players would trade alot, and the smart players would never trade.) Instead, simulate the marketplace "per player". Start with high commissions for each player, then slowly drop commissions for that particular player until that player starts trading. If that player trends at 5% or so purchases or 5% sales, increase the commissions to bring them back towards the 3% goal. Then increase the commissions just for fun until they are at about 1%, then start a new cycle of reducing commissions.
Rather than actual separate commissions, just build the commission into the offered prices. For an additional twist, make offers for semi-random batches of elixer or DE, rather than allowing the player to choose the exact quantity. That keeps them thinking even further, considering what is offered vs. what they need for the next upgrade. When the offers are perfect, the player delightfully trades. When not so perfect, they bigrudglingly trade. Offer four batches each day: quantity of Elixer to buy, quantity of Elixer to sell, Quantity of DE to buy, Quantity of DE to sell. Quantities could vary randomly from 10% to perhaps 130% of player's 7 day average of each resource. This would sometimes offer more than they have on hand, but they could loot to do the trade.
The Town Hall is one of the few buildings you click on to do something. This marketplace would be a nice command to add when clicking on the Town Hall. The TH could use a few fun things like this.
