You did not succeed according to the mechanics of the game. The game defines very specific parameters for success. Those are the ones that matter if you want to argue the game's mechanics. Trading trophies for resources is contrary to how the game is expected to be played. That's ok, but you can't really argue that as a result of playing differently than expected that the game suddenly allows for 100% chance success with lightning. It does not.
It's quite simple. Defense in this game is about protecting trophies first and foremost. Not resources. I know that's not how you play it, but that's how the game is set up. There is no resources leaderboard.
Lightning allows the player to do damage to arbitrary structures within the game. Damage to storages results in loot loss. Therefore lightning against a storage results in loot loss.
