Have enough skull walks for all your internal core walls. These are the ones that slow down attacks. Purple and skull both need 2 WB to get through and this is generally how the outer wall is breached. Upgrading these to skull will make less of a difference that getting the new defences in th9.
Upgrading walls will also do nothing against air attacks, while upgrading to th9 will do plenty
