Yes, it's upsetting, but think about how everyone did it before elixir walls were implemented. Walls are not meant to be all maxed out in 1 week. They are meant to take a while to slow down people from maxing out their base too fast.
Supercell dont make changes to make everyone angry, they do it for a reason. Don't waste time complaining when you could be raiding gold!

Use that spare elixir on having fun with the game. Build a bigger army, experiment some, splurge on a silly single unit raid for the fun of it, donate troops, max out army camps, barracks, and lab research.
In short, stop focusing on the negative. New people that are joining are having more fun than you are, since they are not focusing on what was apparently a bad or broken feature.
