In major sporting competitions, two opponents are pitted against each other, oftentimes based on a schedule set months in advance. If one team turns out to be better than the other - all the better. I never hear people complaining about how "fair" or "unfair" the game was.
Whenever I raid in-game, I find a variety of targets based on my trophy count. Some are stronger, some are weaker, some are completely inactive, but the only people I see complaining about how unfair it is to find a stronger player in their leagues are those who next past every difficult village and would like to subsist solely on inactive bases with depleted defenses, a purposely weakened design, and no clan troops. It's my opinion that players with those kinds of expectations are the most vocal complaining about Clan Wars match ups. The fact that the game attempts to pair you with a team of near equal strength in Clan Wars should be seen as an improvement over in-game raiding and not as a way to validate unrealistic expectations.
A difficult opponent is the best way to improve your game play, yet I often see teams not take advantage of the opportunity and instead skip the war and hope for an inactive, poorly organized, and poorly defended opponent on the next match up. There are getting to be fewer and fewer of those kinds of clans in Clan Wars for them to find, so as long as they hold onto those expectations, they're not going to improve and likely won't enjoy Clan Wars for very long.
