I second those leagues. Just be careful who you raid, the upper level ones will come to get their stuff back and usually do!
Crystal 3 is the best way to farm DE, and you get gold and elixir too for a TH 7. Between the DE bonus and the pumps you can snipe, your heros will constantly be upgrading. You have to be patient and you will loose 50+ trophys when you are revenged, but if you can play 1-2 hours in a row, this is a non issue.

Anywhere from Mid Gold 3 to Crystal 3, as I got my barbarian king in high gold 1.
It is true that the higher level players come back to get their lost loot and usually end up getting more than they lost (I do that all the time).
But Gold 2 should be your friend for farming DE. Almost everyone has more than 500 there.
