As I said earlier, you can rush, but it'll require more time to catch up and to max out. You need to be persistent.
I think staying and maxing everything out at each town hall is the way to go. I rushed my first account to th lvl 9 when i was only lvl 46 so i have been struggling but its not impossible to get out of the hole you dig yourself. On my second account i have th 6 with fully purple walls and everything maxed and the loot possible is so much higher than normal even at only 1000 trophies. Walls are way easier to upgrade lower down so i suggest maxing everything before upgrading town hall.

@crashbros: there's a world of difference rushing to th8 & th9...
Never tell others not to rush so when they rush to TH9, we can raid their poorly defended bases

I only stayed at TH8 for a little more than 1 month. It was a fun month, but it's TH9 time.I probably should have maxed everything, but I was close enough lol

guyz, i know there are lots of opinions, i mean u can see 2 options
1. Rush to TH8 and max it out
OR
2. Rush to 7 and max it
BUT...
There is another option which i guarantee u is the better choice, u dont need to rush things out, if u rush u will mis the excitement in each TH, U will not enjoy what each TH upgrade will give u, u will concetrate on Upgrading it again SO MUCH! That u will miss the fun of it.
MY OPTION ( Which is the wisest choice)
Is to take it slow at EACH TH,
I mean
if u Max out the first THs
Then u will take less time bettween each lvl
u will only take 2-3 Upgrades each TH lvl to a Building
