They are a distraction only as they have negligible offence. The trouble is your troops AI can cause them to divert from formation and if you lure and wait until destroyed half your attack time is gone. I have used them in my CC for war with moderate success as a distraction allowing my defences to pick off the attackers out of formation. When they explode the pups are even more a distraction but short lived. Inexperienced attackers freak out when they see them. If you know one is in the CC just ignore it, if you are surprised don't over react to it, it may wreck your attack for no good reason if you do
