It's part of the game. Contrary to what you may think, the system in place is "fair" and actually very balanced.
Higher town halls can attack lower town halls, but the loot they can steal from lower town halls is reduced dramatically. The higher town hall can still get a satisfactory amount of loot, but it isn't much of a setback to the lower town hall.

Ok, I guess I need to apologize. My opening post was more like a rant than anything else, and I flew off the handle before I researched the game more, and for that I'm sorry.

Listening more to what my kids are telling me (I had listened to them before about this game, but it was more like: ok, thats cool, sounds like you are doing great...blah blah,) I'll ask them to play some more and watch them more attentively, who knows, maybe I'll try it myself.

Wow, I'm impressed, I thought my kids were like me, and wanted 'God mode', lol.

They did tell me that they are saving to level up the town-hall, everything else is leveled up as far as they can level them.
In Age of Empires, leveling everything up is almost like the next level, perhaps it is similar in this game?
If the kids have their defense as high as they can go at town hall level 4, is that sort of like a town hall level 4.9 or so?
Could that be why the higher level attacks?
They have said they've been getting it with a lot of town level 5 guys for some time now.
Somewhat, yes. But only because as the defenses go up higher, the same level TH players will have a harder time so they tend to skip your base while searching.

in fact, there are no reatrictions on TH levels, you could face 3, 4 or 5 TH levels above you, but they are simply not attacking you (no point) or they are in higher trophies area.

    trophy dropping is ♥♥♥♥♥ing? What?

How old are these kids? The matchmaking system is very fair. Losing a battle is not the end of the world.

Even though your young children told you they need gems to be able to play.. Well. This simply is not the case...

Being a th4 they could easily be townhall 6 by the end of the week and never spend a dime.

The game progresses very quickly at those early stages.

Maybe you should try it for yourself and get a better understanding of the game concept

Playing on the PC is against the ToS and will get your account banned.
Kids under the age of 13 are not allowed to play, unless they are supervised by an adult. Are you there the whole time they play?
A TH4 getting smashed by a TH6 is par for the course. For that matter, it is possible for a TH10 to smash a TH3. On the same note, a TH3, if they are feeling frisky, can attack a TH10.
Just to be clear, the wording of the TOS does not exempt the age limit based on supervision. It just says you have to be 13+. Carry on.

2 of my kids will be teens in February, twin boys.
The other is about a year younger.

RangerRussel: They didn't say they needed gems to play, one of them said they needed gems to level up quick so they could beat the guy who wiped him out. There is a difference there. They've been playing for awhile with no problems until just today.

They showed me the replay of the attack, to me it looks like they didn't stand a chance. There were at least a hundred of them. I do see how the difference between a level 4 and 6 can be pretty bad, it seems that at level 5 you get more defense pieces AND more offense pieces, and I've been told all pieces can be a higher level. Perhaps once they hit a town hall level 5, they will be able to defend better.
They can usually only play on the weekends though, school comes before computer games.

It's gonna be tough ride but stick it through and you and your kids will be upgraded to higher ths. Dropping cups is a farming method to reduce the chances of someone attacking you while saving for upgrades. While it agitates lower ths that they can get stomped by ten but not retaliate, the strategy is very effective. I'm glad that you decide to stick with the game as it gets very fun in the later stages, cheers and good luck in the game

You will always get beaten by a stronger player. Always. And, it doesn't matter, so long as you don't lose too much loot.

My kids - not teenagers yet, just today asked me to buy them some gems for this game, they've been playing for a while and havent asked me for anything, and have been talking strategy between themselves when they aren't playing. One is an old Iphone, another is a Note 2 and the other uses ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on a laptop. They get to play on weekends, and when mom isn't home, I allow them to check their villgaes during the week.
Today 2 of them came to me asking if I would buy them some gems. I asked what brought this on, they've been doing so well so far.
I was told to revenge someone who had a level 6 town hall.
I said, I thought they couldn't attack you, since you are a level 4 town hall, and asked to see this.
Sure enough, he got pounded by someone 2 town hall levels higher than him. He didn't stand a chance.
They wanted me to give them gems so they could level up and 'kick this guys butt'.
It ain't happening. I will spend NO money on this game.
Didn't mean to sound like a troll, cause for me spending real money for one is the same thing as multiplying x3.
I can see how the game needs to make money, but this seems to me like a sleazy way to do it.
Im nearly a maxed th9. Every player has gone through those early ths when you get wrecked by a much stronger th.. Its kinda the point of the game.. You destroy other villages. Its very possible and quite easy to progress your base without gems. Ive never bought gems and i could care less if my place got destroyed.
