"writing it off" does not mean your tax is reduced dollar for dollar. It is reduced, but only by your marginal tax rate. Simple example, if SC donates $100 and has a marginal rate of 35% they save $35 in taxes. So they still effectively lost $65. There is also a timing difference on realizing that $35 benefit, but why complicate things?

I don't purchase gems, because I do not use them. I have five builders and have no use for gems anymore. yes, I do boost, once in a blue moon, and my gems have accumulated to more than 2k from obstacles and achievements.

BUT

I still bought those RED gems (pic furhter up in the thread, page 24 I think).

There doesn't need to be a reason. There is no pressure to buy or not to buy. Just do it or do not. It does not affect your performance in game, nor your standing in clan, nor your reputation in the forum. I like your contribution to the forums regardless of whether your TH has a RED shield or not, and I will raid your base, regardless of RED shield or no :P
