Upgrade evenly. This is probably the fastest way to upgrade heroes. Just hit that upgrade button as soon as you have enough DE.
Both heroes are currently at lv23 with king going to 24 in 2 days.

I do 5 lvls at a time.
King was lvl 10 when I got to th9 so I caught up the queen. Then did the king to 15 and left the queen at 10 so on and so on.
I like doing it like this because at the moment king is 15 and queen 13 both cost 70k DE for next lvl. So by the time queen is 15 and I go back to upgrading the king it will be cheaper than my last queen upgrade for a higher level if that makes sense.
i did king to 10, maxed out at th8 and then queen to 5, took a break, and now shes on the way to 10. will be doing king to 15, then queen to 15 and keep going by 5s
Evenly but more to AQ... This is due to i'm still on and off playing so sometimes i just upgrades whenever i have the resources
My queens going to level 13 and my king is level 10, plan to get my queen to 15 then im unsure, id rather go queen to 20, but she will cost so much compared to king, dunno.
