Just wondering how the majority of the community does it.
i personally upgrade the queen if i can afford her, the king if not. Unless my king is the same level as my queen, then i save for the queen

I'm low level compared to many players and I've just started to get to the point where I can upgrade heroes consistently. Previously I was busy with other upgrades and was using excess de for troop upgrades. I was upgrading heroes when my lab was busy with something and I happened to have enough de. Now that those troop upgrades take 10-14 days and my de intake has increased I'm keeping one builder busy with heroes. I'm going five levels at a time starting with the AQ.
Right now i'm pushing my Queen to L20 (She's almost at L19 now) and then after I'll work on my King to L20 (He's just at L10) to catch up
After they are both at L20 i'll do them evenly

Why waste DE on the King when you can have a better Queen?
The king is a big Golem that spawns some barbs (Which instantly get Infernoed/Splashed/Bombed).
The Queen is a 5 range unit that is unlike any other in the game.
Edit: That said, they're both amazing. My King is 20, and his barbs help so much with Skelly traps. I just wouldn't upgrade him unless the Queen is already under hammer, and I can farm enough to keep her going.

Currently only doing the queen (lvl23 right now), King is still at lvl14.
Will probaly only get him to lvl20 before th10.

Both my heroes are level 15. I usually upgrade them evenly, mainly due to cost and so that I don't rely heavily on one of them.

That's how I did it. Never really focused on DE so I could rarely do both but always did queen when I could and king when I couldn't. Queen will be level 40 tomorrow and king will be 19 next week, this game is about to change a lot for me.
