My clan has an optional message board and gchat group.
Most all communication can be handled in-game with clan messages and chat however some like a board to share stuff, strats, etc...
I've saw clans where these additional forms of communication were mandatory and it just isn't necessary so I've found it best to be 'optional' for those who do like it.

My clan uses GroupMe.
We have seperate groups that include:
Leaders
War room
Farming
We also use it to communicate 1 on 1.
Line app is great, and has many more options, but GroupMe is pretty straight forward and easy to manage.
I have used KIK in some of the other games that I have played, but few people have in this clan have kik.

We use Band Group Messaging. Has an app and can be used on computer.
We have our own forum with posted clan guidelines, war guidelines, etc. and a system where you can reserve bases for war attacks. And then the leaders all use Line to communicate with each other.
