Thread: What to do about a premature Town Hall ?

  1. #331
[QUOTE=Hannibal;411330]I get PMs asking for advice on this situation quite frequently and thought I’d write something up to save a little time.

What is a premature town hall?

A premature town hall is a village in which town hall levels are advanced quickly, and usually with the aid of gems, to unlock a high-level feature -- often the X-bow or inferno tower -- while leaving the rest of the base relatively underdeveloped. While any degree of prematurity can be detrimental, the costs are highest for bases advancing to high town hall levels -- TH10 and to a lesser degree TH9.

A premature town hall is not the same thing as a non-maximized town hall. For many reasons it's often a good idea to complete every upgrade and building project available at a given town hall level. While there are reasons to do this, a base which advances with a handful of incomplete upgrades or building projects is not at the same risk to damage their gameplay as described in this thread.

What can you do about it?

First, you need to think hard about deleting your village and restarting. I know that it’s hard to swallow the financial loss, but you need to think carefully about it nonetheless. The reason for this is the hidden loot penalty. SC recently added a notification regarding this when upgrading TH6 and above. A full exposition of the loot penalty can be found in Zach’s post, but the nutshell version is that as you level up your town hall you incur penalties to looting villages with town halls lower than yours, while those lower town halls simultaneously get bonuses to looting you.

The end result of this is that as a premature TH9-10, you are the closest thing to fresh meat that exists in this game. Fully developed TH9-10 villages are going to salivate every time you come up in their attack queue, and even lower town halls are going to take a shot at you for the bonus they get against higher town hall levels.

Bear in mind also that the money you have invested is a pittance relative to the investment you need to create a competitive TH9-10 base. TH7 is the sweet spot for farming gold in CoC, and you have forever lost access to it.

So in short, it’s a twofer. You’re both the kid wearing a “Kick Me” sign on his back, while simultaneously having less ability to dig yourself out of the hole you’re in. Consider carefully if deleting and restarting is a good option.

But let’s say it isn’t an option. The reason doesn't have to matter, but maybe there’s no way you’re going to lose that $100, giving up just isn’t how you roll, and screw math anyway. What now?

    General Strategies:

First, make sure you have all the builders. They’re far and away the best investment you can make with cash, and if you’re going to stick with your gimped base, you’re going to need all the help you can get. So cough up that extra $20-5, and buy the last builders.

Next, bear in mind that you won’t be able to defend your loot for a long, long time. Your best defense is simply not to have loot in your storages by spending it as soon as possible. Consider also that most people consider a threshold of 70-100k gold as the low end of what they’d attack depending on the base strength and troop investment. This means that considering loot penalties, provided you have less than 350k gold in storages, you’re less likely to be attacked by an equal town hall level. (Lower TH levels may still be motivated to attack you though.)

The strategy is to dump loot as quickly as possible so that you never have enough in your storages to be worth attacking. Some people advocate keeping a builder free to dump excess gold into walls, but I’d personally just keep them all building. But to have the resources to level anything, you need to be gaining loot yourself. You’re going to have to learn how to farm.

    Learn to Farm:

There is no shortage of farming guides on this forum, but the nutshell version is to park somewhere between 1200-1500 trophies, and pick on undefended collectors and weak bases for loot with a fast-building army consisting of some combination of tier one troops (goblin, barbarian, archer, minion) or selected tier two troops (giant, wallbreaker). There are several permutations of these troops which are effective. Alex the Great (Ruthless Barbarian) has several youtube videos on his channel showing the popular BAM (barbarian, archer, minion) farming strategy. In order to do be able to farm, you need a viable TH9-10 army. If you have any gems left over after your ill-advised rush to TH9 and builder purchases, this is where you should dump them – in your offense. Realistically a viable army at TH9 is a minimum of 200 pop capacity and level five troops.

    Base Upgrade Priority:

Offense and defense draw largely from separate resource pools, but if there’s ever a choice between them, always upgrade offense first. As far as upgrading your defenses, your top priorities should be the clan castle, mortars, wizard towers, and Xbows. However, don’t do this at the expense of dumping gold fast. Remember that you’re going to be that prime target for a long time. When your base gets steamrolled, it wasn’t that you failed to copy somebody’s base design well enough. It’s that your base is underleveled.

Also, make sure that you're in an active clan that donates. New players underestimate the strength of the clan castle, but a fully staffed clan castle is a force to be reckoned with if properly positioned in the center of your base.[/QUOTE

Honestly I think your are giving great advice but I wouldnt reccomend the player reset, it will take less time to upgrade thier farming army to become viable and start catching up than it would to start from scratch..

the 5 builders however is a must!

Newbie - I'm super too late to see this useful post, please fix

    Hi all,

I'm a newbie of this coc, I've been playing for 3 - 4 months. As the OP said, I'm a rusher! I know I'm stupid ! 500$ gone already, with little things developed. Everything to me seem over but I try to bear with the base to get thing done one by one. I don't want to give up this account. Now that it's really hard when everything is becoming more and more expensive to upgrade. Each time I feel so frustrated when attacking other bases since the loot amount received are far less than the cost of training troops. No profit at all ! Lost ! So the other way I can think of, is to spend gems to boost those 7 gold mines & 7 elixir collectors to survive upgrades. Take a look at my picture of the base.

    Description:

    - Mortar lv 4
    - Canon lv 8 - 7
    - Air defense lv 3 - 2
    - Archer tower lv 7
    - Wizard tower lv 3
    - Telsa lv 1
    - Bow lv 1
    - Inferno lv 1
    - DE drill lv 2
    - Army camp lv 6
    - Clan castle lv 3
    - Laboratory lv 7 (Barbarian lv5, Archer lv5, Giant lv5, Wallbreaker lv3, Wizard lv4, Dragon lv2, Baloon lv2, Goblin lv2, Healer lv3, Spell lightening lv2, the rest are 0)
    - Walls you can see

Please take a look at my base:

I'm not satisfied with it much, and I think this base seem to be out of resource and might take years to upgrade. When I come to understand that rushing Town Hall is useless, one or two weeks ago I start playing from scratch with 5 builders. Everything is nice and going great. Loot bonus is superb. The new town is lv 5 and everything is almost max out except gold and elixir collectors are at lv 6 - 7. After all I'll continue on looting for 750K which is very easy to get for TH6.

I also know the technique of balancing highest possible loot is that we have to balance the trophies that we have. For example at TH5 we have 1200+ trophies. When search for attack the system will tend to look for players regardless of their TH level is but the equivalent trophies to ours. So this is a good chance. Don't skip. We can attack this high level base just to get some loots at least 10K+ gold & elixir just to spend 2 or 3 archers only and make ourselves loose to lower down trophies. Correct me if I'm wrong at this point.

So back to my TH10, it's about to stuck. At least, thank to it. I can use it to donate troops for my TH5 and win most of the time.

I'm sharing this experience to any other players who just start to play and not to do like me in the first place. Hopefully, they come and see this post useful post.

And lastly right or wrong please correct, to all pro here your ideas will be helpful for me to deal with my TH10. To fix my mistake !

    Welcome all the suggestions.

Great thread!! Well done!! I am sure the "rusher/premie" community will weigh in on how wrong you are in your efforts to show them the light. I wish more players would read this before they make the mistake of rushing, well IMO it is a mistake, rushers gonna rush and crushers gonna crush em. This should be a sticky.

    An overdue follow up...

Just want to know what you think, here's pretty much what I've got at TH9 with all my collectors and storages maxed out(besides DE lol) and all of my walls at lvl 6 with a few at lvl 7...

    2 Xbows Lvl1
    6 Archers @ Lvl 8 (1 still under construction)
    5 Cannons @ Lvl 8 (3 being upgraded to lvl 9)
    3 Mortars @ Lvl 5 (1 still under construction)
    4 Wizards @ Lvl 3
    4 Air Defenses @ Lvl 4
    BK @ Lvl 3
    AQ @ LVL 1

I'm trying to knock out the cheapest upgrades first which would be cannons at this point, then i'm going to prioritize splash, probably wizards first since they'll be the cheapest, followed by mortars, archers, cannons, and finally air defenses. I also plan on upgrading my Lab as soon as i've got the 2.5mil to get it to LVL 7 as most of the troops I use are already maxed at lvl 5. Any feedback would be highly appreciated... Thanks!!

Here's a screen shot of my village:

I think I'm finally at the end of the tunnel, basking in the light . It's a long time coming but I definitely made a lot of headway these past two years . Look at me now! Hannibal, thanks for giving me the hope I needed, way back when... and now, I'm almost ready for TH10!
