Just because its possible doesnt mean its legit. In most cases its just some deperate fool that wants more members. Best thing to do is just ignore them.

It is legit, which means it is legal. Depends on who is giving the iTunes card.

In my ex clan the leader gave away 50$ gift cards to the top trophy and donation players.

He would ask for the winners email addresses and send a photo of the redeem code. It was completely legit, he showed the gift cards on Instagram. (After they were used by the winners of course)

Also, you don't need to be rich to give away.

Yeah I agree. I wouldn't be sure if its legit without proof.

Some leaders want to go above and beyond the norm, and I would hazard to speculate that some leaders that consider such give-aways want to show their appreciation and gratitude for their comrades' commitment to making a clan special.

I highly doubt that the primary purpose is to issue some form of bribery to encourage team players to do what they ought to do anyway. Yes, it may support an already present motivation that should be there without a monetary give-away, but we should be careful (very careful) not to confuse consequences with intentions.
This is so true. Our clan also donates itunes cards at random. However, even before we started to donate iTunes cards we were a great donating clan with elders averaging 4-5K a week. The only reason we started to donate is because we have grown as a family and random members want to offer rewards as well as make personal challenges. No one is forced to donate iTunes and no one is forced to compete. It really adds some excitement to the trophy/farming routine. In the end it's not much money for an adult or even a student that holds a job.

For example during trophy runs we have figured out its best for top 2 people to split the prize money. This works better as the first few times when the clear winner was ahead the rest gave up. For top two everyone keeps pushing. And this is for most improved (not top player in clan). We do minimum start points based on TH and see who gains the most trophies. During the trophy pushes we also give the best donator an iTunes. This is great cause not everyone can or wants to compete as they may be doing critical upgrades etc. One member donated 10097 during our 3 day trophy push. That was an amazing achievement and certainly worth a reward. He dropped 6-7 million elixir to help out his clannies. We also have ongoing contests such as beating the best loot of 417/420 which gets $25 (this one is not that easy as its been ongoing for a few months now). The person donating the $25 holds the record and he's proud of it which is why he offered it. I have a personal challenge to another clan member to hit 2500 trophies. If she makes it within a month I'm giving her $20. The guy that holds the 10097 donation record is also proud and has offered an iTunes for anyone that beats his donates as well.

The point is donating iTunes isn't always a scam. It can be a good motivator but more importantly its an incentive and reward. Our clan is great regardless of the iTunes and we don't use it to persuade members to join us. In a way it's like we enjoy each others company and buying each other a drink.

i see some guys here pretty jealous because their clan don't have generous people like TS. When you boss give u bonus for good performance in your real work outside, do u see it as a form of bad motivation? gotcha!

Well said. And it's even better in a clan environment cause for us it's random people that are generous to offer up iTunes. If it's only the boss then it may become more of a bride/incentive. This random kindness is what makes a clan special cause it means that your clannies truly care and that coc isn't just a game to them. It's a great social environment as well.
