Why ?
I put them far to make the job go wb harder but I changed and put them close to make my defense kill the soldiers while they attack buildings.

Code:MY LAST CLANS : Lever 76 in : AKWARIUM Level 77 and 78 : Quebec -Gaulois Level 78 = my current clan = quebec power
For farming where you're more concerned about resource loss far works better. For trophies closer as they are covered by defensive units.
I put them close. Let the fools attack them while my defenses pick them off.
@Mendax - You were kicked for being rude, arrogant and obnoxious and for having a ♥♥♥♥ base.
I put far, as farrrr as possible. Not sparing even a single tile space.
Why ?
Because when I'm attacking, I find bases that are built that way to be much harder to strategically aim your troops.
And you think your defenses can snipe my troops that fast if your deployment spawn area is so close ?
Most proper attacker can easily overwhelm your defense.
Spread barb/gob/arch/giant, then wb, then just rush in and boom.
Another benefit of putting far is due to Ai pathing, barbs/arch/gob will go on a merry go round.
Anyway, previously the wall breaker has a maximum range of half a base, aka 20 tiles "sight", but was increased to 25 tiles already though.
Facescraper has answered this well, let me expound:
1. When you are farming, people tend to space them out as far and wide as possible away from the outer walls. This has two benefits: (i) the farther the attackers have to travel, the more time the defensive units have time to shoot at them, and (ii) as time goes on, the attacking troops tend to bunch up, so yer area defenses (mortar, wiz twr) have a more effective shot
2. When you are trophy pushing, people to put them tighter into the walls, to prevent the circular archer or other troops picking them off, for the 50% battle win
Not particularly rocket science... this has been documented and researched and published in September or October...
