The cost to attack far exceeds the loot I'm getting, what's the deal? Is the "free" part of the game over now?

nope - the upgrades take longer so that balances out the reduction in average loot per raid.
If it helps you i've been farming at TH9 for the past 5.5 months so you have a long road ahead of you.
Now retired from YouTube, feel free to say hi I always like a good chat
I still run my twitter account it's @daddy_clash (although I rarely tweet)
Where's a good trophy range to farm in
Like Daddy said its not bad at all. I got TH9 about 3 weeks ago coming from a maxed TH8 with 50% skull walls, i upgraded cause i didn't want to waste all the elixir. Anyway i haven't had any trouble keeping all 5 of my builders busy and actually I have to do walls because my gold storage is almost always maxed out. Just find a trophy range that you can win with tier 1 troops and has good loot.
Green is cash money, Red is blood, Blue is security, and Dark is mythical
(Orange is Carrots)
I've saved up 5.4 million gold so far this weekend, in between 1300 and 1600.
Playing since September 2012
Level 105
Move all collectors and storages into a corner away from defenses

Coming back for a little bit, although I won't be very active.

this game is not a p2w at all, my sig was actually on a thread about p2w (pay to wins) but the 1400-1600 is the best one i found so far in the last couple of weeks, but today hasnīt been the day on that range! the 1800-2000 is really good, but the bases you get are really strong, so only farm there if your troops are really high leveled!
The short answer is no BUT what your not being told is that your gameplay will change as a result. Many posters are saying that good resources now exist between 1300 - 1400 (contrary to the league concept), as I farm above that lvl I find resources come at a slower rate. For impatient players TH9 definately encourages you to place a greater emphasis on geming resources and defences.
