Wow. I would never gem a donation. I just give what I make for myself. Also, I found I can boost once or twice a week and stay more or less even on gems.
i wouldn't say the game is unplayable, but I would say (and have said) that if you're only going to attack once and then log off while the next army builds, you're more or less as well off not attacking at all - at least once you're holding 2M or so of each resource. The loss of the shield evens out any gain you get from the attack. The only way one for one attacks can pay off (on average) is if the bonus covered both the army cost and next cost, and it doesn't.
