Too much gold in storage

This is a basic question that I cannot find an answer for. What if my gold storage is full and my mines are producing, should I click the coin icon when it's pink? Where does the gold go?

The gold/elixir/DE stays in the collector/drill if the storage is full.

Popping the pink bubble just makes it disappear.. The loot stays in your collector.
