Because gems are the premium currency, and as such shouldn't be raid-able.

As well as this would cause an influx in gem sales as people wouldn't buy them if they could just spend a couple hours and come out with a couple hundred gems

Let me ask...How would you like it if you had a newly spawned Gem Box that were taken from you before you got a chance to claim it? My guess is that you wouldn't be thrilled about it, and this is probably how most people would feel if this were to happen to them. Also, gems would be far too easy to find when in lower leagues where there are more abandoned bases. Those are my thoughts to the question you had there

Because it's the only currency that you need to spend money for, and I'd be pretty mad if someone looted a gem box before I could get to it!
