There is an idea of a new building. The alchemist should have the power to convert elixir to gold or even to dark elixir on high levels. For example level 1 alchemist could convert elixir to gold 100 to 75 at the same time gold to elixir 100 to 75 (he keeps 25% as salary) at the top lvl he could convert 1:1.

Unfortunately this idea has been ruled out as then CoC would have no need for other resources, if we could just freely convert them at the Highest Alchemist level. They would just assimilate all the resources into one, and the others would become redundant.
