My 2 cents on the matter...
Upgrading walls with gold or elixir is a good long term move. The 2 biggest concerns seem to be elixir availability and diminishing orevious accomolishments, so I'll try to adress that a little.
Elixir will no doubt become more scarce after the update, but I think that's kinda a good thing given how many players literally set their elixir storages outside because they have nothing to spend it on. Now, will it hurt it to the point of making it like gold? Possibly, and that's a valid criticism of the move. However, the loot balance is something that can always be adjusted by SC, so it's not like this is a possible "gamebreaker" level disaster. They wouldn't let it get that far. But again, yeah, elixir will be more scarce, I agree.
For those who farmed legos, lavas, even zaps, of course they don't like it. There's some legitimate outrage here, but personally I find it somewhat shortsighted. First of all these kind of price nerfs (although this one is indirect) have been happening for quite a long time now, so this is part of an established pattern by SC of lowering the costs of the highest priced things in the game. It's been done to various defenses over the past year, and I have no doubt that this trend will continue even after the (stronger) reactions from this.
But think about
why they keep doing this. It's not a pointless excersize in frustrating their high level players (although I get how people can think that from their own perspective) and it's not foolhardy pandering to the noobs of the game who can't farm, it's a calculated attempt to reduce the gap between people who started the game early and those who picked it up more recently. If you assume constant prices (or constant value if you prefer that term) over time, 2 identical players who started exactly one year apart would always be one year apart in terms of progress. This does NOT work. You have to start lowering prices and upgrade times as time goes on so that people behind the new content curve can catch up to those who are mostly maxed. If it took you 18 months to max walls (making up a number here), it's perfectly reasonable for SC to want players who start in September 2014 to be able to do so in less time than that, holding dedication level and other factors constant.
Point being, yes it hurts high level players, but they have been doing this for a long time and for a good reason. At least that's my assessment of the matter.
Oh and don't forget folks, plenty more sneak peeks to come. I promise there are goodies, even if you don't like this.
