Personally I honestly believe that buying gems isn't the primary objective for them, they are making a ton of money anyway why unbalance the game, it's certainly not to annoy a group of people such as farmers.
I think they know that the more people become addicted to this wonderful game the more they will naturally make, so they are trying to make it as good a game as possible, everything i've ever seen from the company suggests to me that is their strategy.
They could have done so much to ruin the experience but they havn't .... stuff you can only buy with gems, ads, annoying popups to buy stuff.
I really do believe they did this trophy thing to try to improve the game nothing sinister to get people to spend, they will do that anyway it's a mild form of addiction for millions. Personally to the OP's point I think the levels should be restored to people's names as I quite enjoyed the hunt to get my lvl higher... but that's just my opinion not anything official ya de ya.

Would it not be a better strategy for them to answer us than appearing to ignore us yet again? Maybe I missed something, but so far all I've seen is Steve saying "we heard you", Marika saying "sorry, no", and now you answering in your personal capacity.

Yeah they really need to bring back levels. Everyone I have talked to is very annoyed by not having them visible. This is the number one thing supercell needs to fix. I think everyone is in agreement that they want them back.
A lot of peope have been complaining about the levels missing. In some threads you said that it will stay like this in CHAT but maybe not in CC and when visiting somebody. Still people dont like it, and people are making petitions, but what about this petition:
On for example 10 may, make it so that whenever you log in for the first time that day that a message will pop up and say: "would you prefer levels or shields?" For example. The player can choose between levels and shields (or both?) and the anwser will be send to supercell. Supercell will receive a percentage of what players have chosen and maybe supercell will re-think about the shields...

Is it just me or is global just dead now because levels have gone or its just full of people who haven't built clan castle yet.
Not displaying the levels is an annoyance that could easily be remedied. It isn't the end of the world but it sure is annoying. Would love to see the levels come back - along with the league.
