Greetings all,
I am a casual player of Clash of Clans, and while I am sometimes put off by the "pay gems for less time" aspect, it has proven to be a rather good game and I commend SuperCell for the good work they have done on it and listening to the community for ideas.
I had a few ideas that I wanted to propose that I hope you might consider, and feel free to modify them.
First, I suggest having a time limit for being logged in perday set to 8 hours of the most recent 24 hours. This isn't limit people "who play too much" but rather to limit high ranking people who don't play fair. I've studied the game a bit through wiki's and Youtube, and it seems that numerous players simply keep their devices plugged in and being touched enough to stay active the whole time so they are simply NEVER open to an attack. Hence why you see on the top ranked players players not winning defenses, because they simply aren't defending. This would give regular, but still hardcore, players more of a chance in the higher ranked positions a bit more since they wouldn't need to employ this cheap trick in order to keep their earned points. They would need to honestly rely on base defense tactics.
Second, my last mention of base defense tactics leads to the next several ideas. I feel that base designs are far too typical and boring for defense. There need to be a few adjustments and items added to make it not only more viable to DEFEND a base, but also to make it more of a puzzle and add creativity to strategies. Below are my list of ideas to add as defense tools.
1) Crevasses. These would be straight dug out sections of dirt that would be impassable and two spaces wide and 10 long. They would not be able to be placed side by side or bend (cannot be placed next to any other buildings. This would allow players to put an impassable section in their base to help funnel or create a harder choice for an attack and isolate defenses better without creating "indestructible" walls. The limit would be two. Can be flown over, but cannot be jumped
2) Gatling Batista. This balista would do a high amount of damage to the cone direct that it was directed at, but wold be imobile and unable to fire behind or to the sides outside of the cone of damage. It would be good for giving a specific direction high damage, but be open to attack from other directions completely. Limit 2. Cannot attack air.
3) War Drums/Battle Drums. These drums would beat and slow down units walking speed and attacking speed within the surrounding area (small radius) and would be used for making traversing an area more difficult. Limit 3. Low HP. 2x2 size.
4) Spike traps. A 2x2 trap that is somewhat similar to the crevasses, but is not visible at first. After several units are standing on it, it will drop and kill the units inside instantly like a spike trap, but leave an impassable space behind. Cannot be placed next to buildings. Limit 1.
So those are just a few ideas. Maybe some aren't very well thought out, but I'm no expert yet. I simply feel there needs to be more tactical elements to base defense to make it more viable and varied.
