It's such a vicious vicious circle this upgrade thingy... I read in the thread that someone was saying they sell all their LEM, SEM and BEM so they won't have to store hundreds of hardware.. I'm thinking, is this the right strategy?

That's one side of the story. Other side is that you buy more in the DD then you actually need.

When I was doing my land expansion, I would sell off everything else untill I was done and then whent back to upgrading the barn and silo.

I sold all my saws, axes, LEM and stopped accumulating things from DD for my TT runs.
I really regretted the decision. I wish I had known that you can ask people to store things for you!
I think you need to do whats best for you. I try to keep only 5 of each food item that takes long to bake, and a few more jams.
I dont keep anything thats easy to buy in DD. I do keep LEM and hardware for trading, and sell or trade when my barn is full.
