Ok, I will ask the stupid question: What is "farming"? As I understand it, it's less attacking and more just waiting for collectors and mines to give you resources... It also seems to be thrown out as a bit of a pejorative like "gemmer".

You are wrong... Here come a bunch of explainers.
I guess I'll just explain the basics.
1. How do you think people "farmed" all lego/lava/electric walls? Don't tell me that by farming they just got it all from collectors.
2. You put your town hall outside. Somebody comes along and destroys it. You lose a couple trophies (that you can get back easily) and your storages are safe for 12 hours.
3. It involves a bunch of raiding. Your trophies don't matter as long as you can still find bases with loaded storages and/or collectors.
4. Farming is respected... and it's pretty much the only way to get your loots efficiently.
5. Any cheap army can be used. BARCH, BAM, Goblins, Archers, Arch + Gobs, and even Balloonion are used.
6. My gold grab is 440,000,000 gold, that was from farming.

Also, farming is basically looking for bases that have their collectors almost full.
Farmers' armies tend to consist of at least half of the army being goblins, and the other half archers for other buildings.
The farmer will send out their goblins carefully at all of your unprotected collectors, which will give them about 23% of your buildings destroyed. Then they will use their archers and pick off loner buildings which will give them usually 50% or 51% and about 200-300k gold and elixir. This has happened many, many times to me.

People either farm or gem. People that say they don't farm just don't see it as that, but they really are farming. Farming is just going for resources, not really caring about trophies. You win some, you lose some, but you generally try to stay in a range where you can get good loot for your troop/skill level. Its impossible for people to push for trophies all the time, at some point you hit a wall where you just can't go any higher bc your troops/base won't survive. So you drop a few hundred trophies and just attack for resources.
Sometimes youll make sure you get that 50% just for loot bonus, other times you just won't care bc you took major loot.
You can tell people that farm seriously by looking at their achievements.

Have a nice day.
Farming is for resources.
1. Attack bases with full collectors. And the troops you use to attack are low cost and effective. Such as Barch.
2. Your base is designed to protect resources. Town Hall is placed outside for free shield.
3. usually farmers don't care about trophies. But they need to try which league has the rich loot.
4. Some farmers also upgrade collectors to the full level, which will produce decent amount of resources.
