I went up early as well and do not regret it at all. I had no problem farming. Do your storages early and drills as fast as you can. The DE really flows with 2 level 6 drills. I did those first before army camps.
i have no doubts that there will be a few minor regrets. (of all things, i probably rank teslas highest priority) i'm no trophy hunter right now anyway. i just want to keep building up. i do appreciate the warnings, advice everyone is giving though. i doubt there is a mistake free voyage for anyone going through this the first time. on a second account, i would probably be a lot more patient. i feel like i have employed a pretty quality plan, and God knows i've seen way weaker bases on a daily basis at th9 and th10.
i just felt the window of opportunity was good with the boosts going on. sure, i will occasionally get steamrolled, but isn't that bound to happen for pretty much everyone?
as an ealrier poster suggested... we all eventually get to the same point with time and persistence. i have my list of priorities mapped out, and i'm ready to expand. i will fight to do three more tesla upgrades while waiting on the 10 day upgrade to finish.
i actually think getting those new level one items is pretty important, because they are just more distraction for enemies.

On this topic, I agree walls are near pointless (against any decent player), especially in comparison to having more and higher level defenses. Personally, I am finishing L8 walls mostly because I have a lot of extra gold and they look cool...not that they are any more effective than L7.
As far as defenses are concerned, the only reason I would recommend against upgrading early is because yeah you will get more defenses, but then their build times and upgrade times take away from your old defense buildings. Especially the long ones such as AD L6 or Tesla L5&6. Not to mention spell, lab, camps, etc.
For loot penalty, I am TH8 and I would say 90% bases I raid are TH8, some TH9, and very, very rarely a TH7. I am only raiding for resources, so maybe that changes for trophy people. - This means I would only take a 10% loot penalty for upgrading my TH early...maybe once I get better troops, I would raid more TH9.
My overall point isn't to necessarily max everything before you upgrade TH, but the less you do, the more back logged your builders will be.

The issue is that as a th8, th10s weren't gunning for you. Now as a th9, you'll be on the menu. and you might think you can just hide at lower trophies, but you'd be amazed how many th10s patrol the low trophies. You have to drop so low that you can't find good loot.
If I were in your place, I'd leave a builder always free and dump gold on walls everytime I went to log off. Would be very hard to farm up some upgrades but not much else you can do. Good luck.
i am aware of the 10% loss in revenue. i have been on the menu for months at th8, as level 100+'s are always lurking and leveling whenever possible. i'm not super concerned about that stuff, as i'm not exactly that far away from maxing things out anyway.
except for walls... and that is an area that i tend to think is overrated. sure, the walls are helpful, but not against those same level 100+'s that want to crush a lessor defender. would level 8 walls keep them from killing me? nope. this isn't a thread suggesting anyone else's way is right or wrong. i'm not saying it's the right way, just a gamble i wanted to take to see what happened. i've seen a lot of really early th upgrades and those that wait until everything is maxed. there aren't as many doing it this way. experimenting on a free game doesn't exactly feel like a huge gamble.
i've had decent success building up thus far. again, i am open to suggestions on what to work on first and foremost. this is all about opinion i'm sure. there are going to be different camps supporting different theories. would you really pump all your gold into walls over teslas and x-bows? seems like the wrong thing to do. i could be wrong, and everyone on the forums can correct me.
