This is a great idea that I really do hope makes it onto the game. I love it! Some days I have too much work to commit to the war, or sometimes I'm just busy. This would be great!

Fantastic idea, some of my clan mates don't like to war. This will be an excellent remedy to that problem.
One quick thing though. Do the members choose whether or not they want to war, or do co's and leaders do that?

Keep it simple. Let either the player opt themselves in or out... or let a leader opt them out but perhaps not in. I am sick of hearing about so people claiming leaders will abuse that as we already can kick people out for the same effect.
Super Cell likes to keep things REALLY simple and thats a good thing. To keep it simple let the interface for this just be the clan roster and you select the war icon. Colored for in, greyed for out. Easy peasy.
Leader of clan Ironclads. We are always looking for new members. We value camaraderie, teamwork, and maturity. We war once a week thanks to the Opt In/Out feature that gives players choice! Chat is kept clean and respectful. Come by and say hi!
I see many of these suggestions and I agree on every one of them. I made a poll a while back and the results were as positive as this one.
With that being said, I am waiting anxiously for this feature.
The main reason is because people don't want to kick people and invite them just so they can opt outon war. While that is a solution, it has some consequences, including misunderstandings, drama (omg, you kicked me out so that I wouldn't be in war) and loss of donation statistics.
Some might argue that if one does not wish to participate in war, one must simply join a clan that does not participate in war. The reason this is not true for many people is that those who care about being able to opt out are more likely to be loyal members, or at least friends with many. Leaving as a group is not a solution either since the group of friends would still be split between warring and not warring. Splitting the group results in the splitting of friends, which lowers the amount of motivations to keep playing CoC. If sister/feeder clans been implemented, that would be a long workwaround that could still be flawed.
There is another reason that this is suggested, which is that players will still "have a life" outside of CoC. This includes vacations, examinations, business trips, blackouts (+and other force majuere disasters) in the residence of one player which doesn't affect the others physically etc.. Thus, some players would only opt out some times and return to war actively.
In a old thread SuperSteve from Supercell gave a reply to this war opt/in and out feature.

Hey Guys,
We've talked A LOT about adding an opt-out feature in Clan Wars and it's not currently in the cards. At this point, we just haven't found the right solution that fits Clash how it should.
We always try to avoid unnecessary complexity in our feature design and strive for features that work consistently and simply for all players. Some players would be thrilled with an opt-out system, but others would prefer things like opt-in, leader-chooses, variable team sizes, or other solutions. Also, letting players pick-and-choose what components of their clan experience they participate in is not a design philosophy we support. When you're in a clan, you should all be in it together! Even further, implementing a system that can enable undue pressure on players ("Opt out or we'll kick you" or "Give me Crab Claws or you can't come to war with us") falls far short of this mark.
That being said, we're in favor of adding more control and meaningful direction to Clan Wars. When we look into the next batch of Clan Wars features, that will be the time to reconsider things like opt-out systems, and possibly come up with better solutions that encourage everyone in their Clan to stick together and participate no matter what. We'll see what happens!
We'll keep tabs on any feedback and ideas you guys come up with for future Clan Wars improvements. Keep the feedback coming.
Cheers,
Steve

Signature-BB-code-limit, you forced me to unleash colour theory.
I think this is an excellent idea but couple things I would add is the leaders and co-leaders can decide who is in and who is not. just in case you got a couple of low levels and you'd rather them not to be in. also people could state "oh i can't be in this clan war" or just discuss with the leader/co's if they want to be in or not. Also they could have a message come up in your inbox like "You have given the ability to join your clans war! Do you want to join?" with buttons with Yes and No. If they hit yes they cannot leave the clan during the war (getting rid of people who just rage quit or something in the first 5 hours because your clan is losing). You could also have it where the leader only can set it up to where if a player is inactive he is automatically kicked after the war. that's just my thoughts but your version is quite good on its own![]()

291 vs 30 ppl...
This is a huge difference in the favor to let people Opt in or out of war.
And these are numbers from people to actually take the time to become a forum member and vote let alone read these type of post. What I am getting at is this... Look at how many millions of casual gamers play the game and actually care to have such a feature for so many reasons...
Nothing will be lost from making this change.
If super cell did an open vote for this feature..I will bet 80% of users will vote yes to get this done.
Like the "war list". Clan members choose to opt in or opt out. Leaders may opt out inactive members.
This will mean that you don't have to kick those loyal members who have gone camping.
The total opt-in list should be limited to 50, there should be no limit for opt-out members.
YES. This shouldve been added long ago.
"Opt out or we'll kick you" is not a big problem compared to the current regular kickings due to unavailability.
" opt-out system, but others would prefer things like opt-in, leader-chooses, variable team sizes, or other solutions" These are very minor details, please don't hold up development on these questions. Opt-out is most logical. Being in the clan war is obviously the default; it the current only option, and is the point of playing. Leaders and Co-Leaders who have the option to kick should have the lesser option to opt-out an inactive member.
"encourage everyone in their Clan to stick together " Exactly. Don't make us kick out loyal members who want to go camping or stop having regular seriously contested wars.
