I just heard about this great new way to win wars, it seems like it unfair but my friend insists that it's not. What's the best way to go about effectively ghosting? Do you just unplug your modem/router?

It's not new and, nobody here will tell you how to do it.
Just drop goblins and barbs around his base (different ai, more coverage) and close it as fast as possible. Or u can do hogs and try multiple times for traps inside the layers. I highly not recommend it and I don't do it, but that's how u do it if u want

Buy bloodborne on the ps4. Don't ask questions. Just do it.
It's extremely unsportsmanlike. Exploiting a feature in a attempt to to win wars to check CC's/traps on a mechanism that is meant to help people in the event of the loss of a internet connection.
Would not recommend it at all, and I doubt many here will agree that you should use it.
Supercell is aware of the issue as of my knowledge though I don't think a fix is in the mix at the current time.
