I wouldn't recommend rushing to town hall 7. Most people think it's ok, but it's not. The extra defences or upgraded troops won't help you. When I got to town hall 7, I was level 50. Max out everything first. The problem is, if you upgrade it to TH7 now, you will a) Get less loot from TH6 and lower and b) Higher level people will attack you and if you're not ready for it, then you've made a big mistake. Clash of Clans requires patience.

As long as you max out the th7 you'll be fine.

I agree. People also forget something really awesome about being a low th-- loot bonus! I just started an alt account and got to th5. I can get 200k per raid of each gold and elixer easy from a th7 using just some Goblins (by finding a base with full collectors and underleveled mortars/wiz towers+ bad base design). Its a very specific kinda attack, but you get something like 150% more access to a th 2 levels higher than yours. So while the loot penalty crushes rushers, the loot bonus really helps make maxing out your th beneficial. Also, things like rushing without upgrading air defenses or walls (the two most common mistakes) will massacre you as more aerial troops come into play at th6 (healers) and th7 (minions, dragons). Not to mention that as I am currently a th8, I can only get decent loot if a th6 has maxed collectors that are full and some loot in their storages, whereas even just lv9 collectors are easy goblin feed if I attack a th7. And since you can't really find a ton of th8+ with exposed collectors and terrible mortars+wiz tower, farming is just all around better if you dont rush. The new army camp and barracks shouldnt be necessary to get good loot. Barching is your mistake. No matter how many people pretend its good, Barchers cant do anything that goblin users or giant/archer users can do. More importantly, barchers cant really get decently protected storages. If you are going to search for collectors using all goblins or all archers is almost always the better option and using giants to tank instead of barbs opens up the option of more easily penetrating bases.

    Question

I'm a little confused why there's any debate at all. Help me understand:

Raids are paired based on trophies. Nothing more.

As such, your TH level isn't counted at all.

So, after changing from TH5 to 6 to 7, if you stay within the same league (trophy range) you'll be seeing the same type of defenders, right? And, conversely, you'll be attacked by the same type of attackers. Right?

If that's the case, then it seems to me that TH level, on it's own, makes no difference at all if you also don't change your trophy range.

I realize the loot calculations change based on TH level difference, but a bigger army will have an easier time attacking (this was an understatement going from TH4 to TH5; even without any TH5 upgrades, the extra camp was game changing). On the defense side, if you're so weak, then the shields should be 16 hours, so you aren't even being hit twice a day. And, of course, a shield is better than any level of defense.

What am I missing? (aside from experiencing it myself... but, I can only experience one direction or another)

I'm trying to make the decision myself, too.

To me, rushing to TH7, is the best bet. so many pros

access to lvl 4 troops, = can 1-2 star TH7 or lower. once u have dragons TH8 becomes viable option for 1-2 star, and TH7 can be 3 starred..

-Rage Spell in SF! (third spell in cue)
    - 4th Camp (to lvl6 = 200 troops)
    - 4th Barrax, = more troops to que, so you train your army faster. *Access to Dragons*
    - Dark Barrax = Minions and Hogs (murder them rich TH6s with only 1 A/def, and help out on TH7+)
    - Access to BK but Dark is hard to come by unless you are in Gold3 or higher (or willing to Thor for it )
    - Extra Storages, third mortar, two Teslas, 2nd A/Def.
    - lvl 7 walls
if you have 4 builders you can really max out quickly.

    Cons
    The start of loot penalty.
TH8 will target you much more, TH9 wont mess too much with you.(too much)
Getting Dark can be difficult and typically in higher ranges that are at the border of your lvl 4 troops capabilities..
will be weak for a while, but IME you can raid exponentially more than what they can take from you. TH7 is a big buff to offense, and slight buff to defense.
lvl7 walls are the start of the evil wall grind

This is a TH to max out IMO, since TH8 only offers a smidge of offense and defense compared to TH6-to-TH7, and TH8-to-TH9. but it is wise to Max them (at least offense and splash) starting from TH7.

There is a loot penalty that applies when you attack people with lower town hall levels than your own. When you upgrade your Th you will still see the same people to raid if you are the same trophy level, but most will have less loot available for you to take.

    1. It's easier to find better loot at a lower TH because of the loot bonus you get from raiding other townhalls higher then you; so if you stay in the same trophy range you will see the same bases, you'll just get less loot from those bases. But of course by upgrading you also get more troops making it possible to raid villages you otherwise wouldn't have been able to.

    2. The loot penalty on your TH is reduced for higher level players, which makes you more tempting for a higher level town hall. If you are at 6, for example, a TH 8 will rarely bother raiding you because of the 50% penalty. But once you upgrade to 7 the penalty is greatly reduced (90%) making you a much more attractive target. So while the same bases will see you, you become a much more attractive candidate to raid for people that would otherwise skip you because of loot penalties.
