This is my suggestion, being a TH8 too, is that
1. try putting out your townhall. It will give you that shield that will give more time for collectors to collect
2. Instead of saving up for massive upgrades do little ones first. like a wall or two. It will keep your loot down and deter any big loss raids. i try to upgrade 2 walls a day

I would also agree that your bases does have some effect on keeping what you work so hard to gain. I'd say start off by centralizing your clan castle. Work on the rest of your defenses as often as you can. It will seem tough keeping it and a th9 with lvl6 troops will still smack on you. However, it will get easier as your defenses and walls become stronger.

Lets face it, when we have over 2M in our storages we're going to get raided. My best advise is to use archers and tag collectors, mines, and drills and build up your loot that way. Archers are very cheap to train and it takes about 20 minutes to train them all. Load up your barricks and by the time your raid is over you'll have around 30 archers in your camps. Then when you log off have enough in your storages to be prepared to lose 200K+ in loot and still is able to upgrade defense, a camp, or whatever.
I do agree with everyone else, work on those walls. I can get to your storages with just lvl 5 archers.
