First it helps unlock cool deco (yay for decos). Then it shows how strong your base is. Its like the summary of what you are in-game. Other than that, there are no benefits.

It has no real useful purpose apart from telling people your level.

I agree with the other posts in this thread. XP doesn't do much at all. However, as you progress, it can be detrimental in some cases. I see it in globals every day and, recently, in my own clan. You will see a crystal or master apply to join and you check his XP level and he/she is like level 39. TH sniping anyone? All the peeps in global scramble to join their clan and don't even think about bases or whether or not they deserve it. Therefore, if you are crystal and level 80+ then you are slightly more respectable because other players will know you've earned it through upgrades.

Basically once you hit level 100 you can strut around global like you're better than everybody else.

Seriously though, it's basically showing how well upgraded your village is and how much you donate and it serves as a basis for gloating rights and sense of accomplishment. Of course somebody who donated 100k troops lifetime and somebody who donated 25k troops lifetime really aren't the same even if they're both level 100.
