Make sure your buildings are closer together then. Troops cannot be placed within one space of a building. Without a picture I'm not sure what else to tell you.
Enter "Village Edit Mode" and make sure there are no empty squares.

Do not leave a 3x3 space open. 2x2 or 1x1 spaces are fine but NOT 3x3 spaces. Hope this helps!
